Imagine a world in which cancer can be treated without disrupting life, can be cured or can even be prevented

The Samuel Waxman Cancer Research Foundation (SWCRF) focuses on the most promising strategies for developing cures and treatments for many types of cancer. It even offers hope of being able to prevent cancer from developing. We are on the cutting edge of a revolution with alternatives to the traditional treatments of chemotherapy and radiation, which kill cancer (and healthy) cells. Foundation-supported research includes reprogramming chaotically growing cancer cells to behave normally, understanding cancer stem cells, and mobilizing the immune system. These will lead to precisely targeted treatments or preventatives which will have minimal side effects on the recipients.

SWCRF funded some of the earliest research that proved that reprogramming cancer cells (known as “differentiation therapy”) worked, leading to the cure of acute promyelocytic leukemia. Since 2002, we have expanded our scope to support investigation in a wide range of cancers – lung, breast, melanoma, brain, colon, liver, pancreas, etc.  Our 60 internationally-recognized scientists form a highly collaborative “Institute Without Walls”, in which they share information and tools to speed the pace of research.

To further international collaboration, the Foundation has organized international conferences on differentiation therapy designed to bring together investigators from around the world in an effort to communicate their findings for the benefit of the entire scientific community. These conferences are a major forum for the exploration of the newest developments in differentiation therapy.

Since inception, we have supported and trained more than 160 internationally recognized scientists by awarding over $65 million in strategically focused grants. 87% of every dollar donated goes directly to our outstanding researchers.
